It’s another beautiful day to be online.

Move over, Bitcoin mining. Crypto isn’t the only industry in hot water over environmental concerns. Building AI models requires a ton of computing power, and those computers get as hot as Vegas in July. And just like a Wet Republic pool party, it requires a lot of water to keep the giant tools cool. Microsoft’s latest environmental report reveals its water consumption jumped 34% since last year, and early findings from an upcoming study reported that each ChatGPT conversation uses a bottle of water. The company has shared a commitment to reducing their environmental impact, just like Tim Cook did this morning.
Zaddy, Esquire. A group of writers filed a new lawsuit against OpenAI, and Microsoft has come out swinging in defense of their ChatGPT users. Users have expressed concerns about the company’s Copilot feature, worrying that they’ll get sued for IP infringement if they use its output. Microsoft has decided to throw money at the problem, revealing their “Copilot Copyright Commitment” whereby they will pay the legal bills and any settlements for any customer who gets sued. It’s giving Jeff Bezos's second yacht.
Mr. Steal Your Data. X has updated its privacy policy, stating it will use posts to train machine learning and AI models. At the same time, it is banning any other company from crawling or scraping the site without express written permission, essentially granting X complete ownership of data on its platform. Elon has also stated that his recently formed (and creatively named) xAI company will work closely with X to develop advanced AI models. It sounds like Elon has found bought himself a treasure trove of proprietary data from one company to build the other. Don’t hate the player, hate the game.
We hang out in AI-image bot chatrooms so you don’t have to.
