Move over, Bitcoin mining. Crypto isn’t the only industry in hot water over environmental concerns. Building AI models requires a ton of computing power, and those computers get as hot as Vegas in July. And just like a Wet Republic pool party, it requires a lot of water to keep the giant tools cool. Microsoft’s latest environmental report reveals its water consumption jumped 34% since last year, and early findings from an upcoming study reported that each ChatGPT conversation uses a bottle of water. The company has shared a commitment to reducing their environmental impact, just like Tim Cook did this morning.

Users have expressed concerns about the company’s Copilot feature, worrying that they’ll get sued for IP infringement if they use its output. Microsoft has decided to throw money at the problem, revealing their “Copilot Copyright Commitment” whereby they will pay the legal bills and any settlements for any customer who gets sued.
