Mic Drop Moment. Based investor Bill Gurley stole the show at the All In Summit, with a 20-minute talk that laid out - in no uncertain terms - the stifling impact of regulatory capture on innovation and free markets. Throughout American history, large corporations have cozied up (and donated) to legislators in order to influence laws in their favor. Gurley brought receipts on how corporations in the telecommunications and healthcare industries were able to influence regulation that essentially prevented new companies or competitors from entering the market. As congress sets its sights on the tech world, and the Zucks of the world meet with lawmakers on the reg to discuss the “necessity of AI regulation” (wink wink), it puts the entire tech startup and venture capital industry at risk. Make some popcorn, burn your bra, and give it a watch.
Moves like Jagger. Boston Consulting Group conducted a study on their own employees to understand how AI impacts performance. They randomly split participants into two groups - one who would use AI to complete a series of 18 typical consultant-y tasks, and one who was not allowed to. They found that employees who used AI completed 12% more tasks, 25% faster, and at 40% higher quality than those who didn’t use AI. However, the study found that while using AI is helpful for employees in some tasks, over-reliance on the tech (especially in cases where AI is mid) actually makes the humans “fall asleep at the wheel” and perform worse. They call this the “Jagged Frontier” and figuring out how to navigate it is a whole new skillset for knowledge workers to gain in the next few years.
Corporate marketing mischief. Coca-Cola has co-created a new soda flavor and brand meant to taste “like the future” with the help of AI. The flavor, called Y3000, was generated from providing suggestions from Gen-Z Coke drinkers to an AI, and letting it generate a recipe and brand. In perhaps the best culinary review of all time, Mashable writes, “the flavor is mostly supposed to resemble Coke, but with an AI-derived twist that some have claimed to consist of mostly raspberry, strawberry, and fruit-punch flavors.” Yum!
We hang out in AI-image bot chatrooms so you don’t have to.
